Specifically for PhD Candidates
As a PhD candidate and Research Associate, you have different roles and activities here at the S2B. Roughly your time is split into four key parts:
Scientific Qualification (25%)
This entails your independent research, aka your PhD. At the start of your journey, you have to decide for a topic, a partner university and a supervisor. Check out our pages about the various partner universities that might help you in your search.
Research Activities to drive the topics of the S2B (35%)
This mainly includes your work in our projects (Erasmus, BMBF, others) and the writing of new applications and proposals to acquire new funding for the centre. For further information, check out our Projects and Proposals pages.
Teaching Activities (25%)
Every PhD Candidate is required to teach at least 3 Semesterwochenstunden (SWS, hours). Also, from time to time, teaching includes supervision of thesis or transfermodules. See the pages on Teaching for further information on our various teaching activities at the S2B.
Self-administration (15%)
The organisation of PhD Workshops
Network management and care
Participation in workshops and conferences
Support in the activities of the S2B Team
Student Assistants (aka Hiwis)
Our team is often extended and supported by multiple student workers from both Bachelor and Master programs from FH Münster and beyond. Every PhD candidate has a limited budget from the faculty to get supported by one student assistant. Further budget need to be acquired through our various projects.
Business Cards
You can order over the FH website your one business cards. Just file out the order form and the will deliver it to our office. Here is the link: https://www.fh-muenster.de/intern/hochschulkommunikation/strategische-kommunikation/visitenkarten.php
Software tools
We use a wide variety of software tools for different tasks. Most of them can be freely downloaded or we have a license through the FH, the faculty, or the centre.

Teaching | Mentimeter | FH Mail (ask Sarah Kruse for a license) | Interactive surveys and quizzes for lectures. |
LinkedIn Learning | FH library | Through the FH, you can access all of LinkedIn Learning's videos and content. Courses might be accepted for Credits during your PhD program (true for Adelaide).
Productivity | Grammarly | Own free account (UT ETM has a pro license - ask your university) | Great AI-based writing, editing, and revision tool. |
Microsoft Office | FH account - DVZ software library | No explanation needed. Excel, Word, Outlook, OneNote, etc.

Trint | S2B account (ask Iulia) | Automated transcription of audio and video files. Great for qualitative research. Both German and English (and many other) languages are supported. You have to double-check the text, to ensure high quality.
MaxQDA | FH account - DVZ software library
SPSS | FH account - DVZ software library
Scopus, Web of Science | FH account - library | The two main search engines for scientific publications. There are slight differences in their databases, so make sure to use both of them.
Publishers (Elsevier, Wiley, etc.) | FH account (very limited), your partner university account (in most cases more access rights/subscriptions) | The FH has a very limited number of subscriptions to scientific publishers, limiting your access to articles of interest for your given research. If your university also does not have access to a given article, make sure to ask around at the centre, as other universities might have other subscriptions.
Reference Managers: Mendeley, Endnote, Citavi, etc. | FH account or your university | It is highly recommended to spend some time on the decision which reference management software to use. They differ in terms of availability for operating systems (e.g. Citavi currently not available for Mac), the license from the FH, and their features. |
